  • Notes
    • Joint founder of Baines Brothers, Canal Carriers of Ladywell Street, Preston.
In her book 'The Lancaster Canal in Focus' Janet Rigby writes: 'Baines brothers Lawrence, James and John were the main carriers on the canal. When Wigan Coal and Iron went out of business in 1928, The baineses took over their fleet as well as the vessels of smaller companies such as Hampton's of Preston. When Baines Bros ceased trading in 1944 they sold their boats to the bargees for ?30 each.'
