  • Notes
    • Apparently changed surname to Smith on arrival in South Africa in 1850s. Married as Smith, but no father named on MC. Subsequently told family that his birth name was Robinson. Death notice in the Port Elizabeth Herald states: "James Smith . . . late of Burscough Bridge, Lancashire . . ."
(Smith possibly maternal grandmother's maiden name. Information from his great-grandson Tony Smith of Tasmania, who has established a DNA match with James Robinson's 2X great-grandmother, Elizabeth Shelton.)
