    A note by the Curate, R F R Anderton, in Henry's baptism record states of his mother: 'I believe this woman's name to be Longton, though she calls herself Prescott', indicating that her marriage to William Prescott may have been bigamous.

    Age given as 34 (should be 24) in 1881 census (wife's age also exaggerated, possibly because of children).

    Possible entry in 1911 census, age 57, with brother John as colliery boatmen at R Spencer and Sons wharf, Blackburn, though both recorded as single.

    William married Margaret Tinsley on 12 Jan 1881 in St Nicholas, Liverpool. Margaret (daughter of Thomas Tinsley and Mary Hesketh) was born in 1849 in Heath Charnock, Adlington. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Baptism record on Lancs OPC is for a second Jane but this must be Margaret because the Jane born in 1843 is listed in the 1851 census, as is Margaret, age 1, for whom there is no baptism record.
    Second marriage to William Prescott probably bigamous - see notes for first husband, James Longton, and in her son Henry Prescott's baptism record.
    In 1901 census, names of mother Margaret and daughter Ellen have been transposed, with Margaret indicated as a widow, although William Prescott is living in Oldham as father-in-law of his stepdaughter Elizabeth McGoldrick.

    Thought to have died, and wife remarried. There are two deaths on Lancs BMD in 1865 at age 29, and a burial at St Cuthbert, Halsall, on July 13.

    Notes:

    Thought to be the Ann Prescott (wid) who married boatman Richard Hesketh at St John the Baptist, Burscough, in 1866 (listed in the Burscough Boatmen book) - but the Bow Lane microfilm is unreadable. Richard and Ann Hesketh are in the 1871 census in Stanley Dock, Liverpool, with sons Thomas, 12, and John, 9, both b "Boscastle" (Burscough?): These are thought to be Ann's (Prescott) sons from her first marriage. Richard and Ann are also in the 1881 census on the canal at Melling, ages given as 50, with a niece Alice Forshaw, 13, b Burscough.
