Family records quote a Liverpool Mercury report on Jan 21st 1831:- 'Mr John Hart, who was upwards of 9 years captain of one of the packets in the employ of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company. His kindness and attention in his situation ensured him the respect of all. He has left a wife and young family to deplore his death.'
