Susannah in several records. Birthplace indicated as Yorkshire in 1841 census, but Greenwich, Kent, in 1851. Payne, Susan (I53206)

Susie in 1911 census. Lane, Susannah (I49552)

Sutcliff in marriage record. Sutcliffe, James (I01668)

Swan in marriage record. Swann, Henry (I33866)

Swinton, where Christiana was baptised, is on the Dearne and Dove Canal, at the junction with the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation. Whitaker, Christiana (I41239)

Sydney in 1901 census. Vernon, Sidney (I57896)

Sylvester in marriage record. Silvester, John (I62668)

Sylvester in some records. Silvester, Thomas (I60088)

Sylvia Lily on Lancashire BMDs. Cheetham, Sylvia Lilian (I15648)

Tabatha in some records Whittle, Tabitha (I03420)

Tarbotton in several records. Not found before 1881 census. Tarburton, William Edward (I27351)

Taylor in marriage record, Turner in banns. Taylor, William (I12779)

Teresa in 1901 census, living with her uncle James Harrison. Harrison, Thirza (I48908)

Teresa in 1901 census. Povey, Iresia (I09492)

Teresa in baptism record. Patman, Theresa (I07167)

Tergoose in baptism record. Turgoose, Robert (I58028)

The 1760 baptism on Lancs OPC is assumed to be of the Anthony, son of Anthony, who married Mary Hartley in 1784. But there are two burials in St Mary, Lancaster, of an "Antho" or "Anto" Cartmel in 1761 and 1763, no age given. One of these could be Anthony's father, the other unknown. Cartmel, Anthony (I12874)

The 1841 census has a Thomas Sherman or Sharman, age 15, ship's carpenter, in Liverpool but not born in Lancashire. There is a possible baptism (Cheshire BTs, Findmypast) on July 30 1826 to William and 'Helen' Sherman in Stretton, nr Appleton Thorn, Cheshire, which would make him a brother of the Catherine Sherman b1834 Scarisbrick (qv) who married James Turner in 1853. Sherman, Thomas (I06754)

The 1841 census has two children - Ann, 12, and James, 10 - with Edward and Catherine who seem not to be theirs. (Their own daughter Ann, 6, is also listed.) Baptisms exist for Ann Robinson 15.2.1829 St Michael, Aughton, and for James Robinson 10.4.1831, St Mary the Virgin, Rufford, both to parents Thomas (boatman) and Catherine, so possibly niece and nephew, though the names conflict with the known children of Edward's brother Thomas and Catherine nee Culshaw. Robinson, Edward (I02855)

The 1841 census is confusing as Robert, 60, is accompanied by Eliz 60, with Christiana, 20, and Esther, 15, then a Jane Smithson, 59.. Esther's mother is identified as Jane in her baptism record, as is Robert's. Smithson, Robert (I12530)

The 1857 marriage at 'St John's Chapel, Lathom' might have suggested Lathom Park Chapel, except that it was 'according to the Rites of the Roman Catholic Church', so is assumed to have been St John the Evangelist in Chapel Lane. The MC identifies the registrar as John Gobin, minister Richard Hodgson and according to the Taking Stock website of Catholic Churches a Canon Hodgson served the Mission from 1850-71. Family (F02826)

The 1881 Census gives Henry's birthplace as "Fore Rig, Yorkshire", which must be Foulridge, Colne, where his parents were married. Henry's baptism is listed at St Bartholomew, Colne, with his name mis-spelt as Falshaw; his brother Thomas was also baptised there, and his birthplace is given in 1881 as Colne. Other census records give their birthplace as Burscough or Lathom, where the family lived. Before the 20th century county boundary changes, Foulridge was but a mile or so from the Yorkshire border. Forshaw, Henry (I05941)

The 1911 census indicates that John and Hannah had six children, all of whom died. Smith, Hannah Elizabeth (I57215)

The 1911 census oddly records that Mary and Thomas, married 40 years, had only one child. Slack, Mary (I23133)

The ages given for this family in the censuses are quite erratic and rarely tally with the known baptism dates. Henry is age 8 in 1841, 20 in 1851, 25 in 1861, 30 in 1871, 46 in 1881, 60 in 1891 and 66 in 1901 death record on Lancs BMD. Bamber, Henry (I04859)

The banns are for George Fratson, read on Dec 9, 16 and 23 1894 with the marriage date of Dec 25 overwritten, but wrongly entered in the marriage record itself as William Fratson.  Family (F18557)

The baptism entries for Margery and her twin Martha are oddly separated by two other records with later dates in the parish record.
Age given as 84 in death record.
Abram, Margery (I01560)

The Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys and St George became Manchester Cathedral in 1847. Family (F09599)

The family MI at St John the Baptist, Burscough says Richard was 'lost in the River Mersey' aged 40, so is not recorded in the Burial Register. Abram, Richard (I07539)

The following entry is from "List of Identified Mariners of Tarleton & Hesketh Bank" on www.heskethbank.com/hisory.html:-
Gorse Lane, Johnson Robert, Tarleton, Boatman, Bapt. 6.1.1811 Born 24.12.1810.
Tkt no 116488. 5?8?, sandy hair, fair complexion, grey eyes, crooked nose. Can?t write. son of Robart J & Molly".
Johnson, Robert (I16624)

The Houghton family bible has Beatrice's marriage date as June 4 1895, but this is thought to have been entered later with a 10-year miscalculation. Shewould have been only 16, and the 1901 census has her single, age 22, living with her parents. Houghton, Beatrice Alice (I20282)

The Lancs OPC baptism record is for an Ann Prescott, which must be an error as Thomas and Ellen's daughter Ann, b 1881, is alive aged 10 in the 1891 census. Lancs BMD confirms an Ellen - not an Ann - b Lathom in 1887. Prescott, Ellen (I13344)

The last boatman to operate a horse-drawn barge on the canal, according to family records. Lamb, Thomas (I04649)

The Liverpool Mercury of Friday October 13, 1837, reported Thomas's death: 'On Monday last, suddenly aged 40, Mr Thos Rigby of the firm Tyrer, Rigby & Co, canal carriers, sincerely regretted by his family and friends.' Rigby, Thomas (I46866)

The only plausible birth recorded is in Q3 1844, Ormskirk (Free BMD), a year before her baptism, but the mother's maiden name on Lancs BMD is Irlam. And this birth is rather close to that of her brother Thomas, registered in Q1 1844. Hunter, Ellen (I02798)

The six children listed were all baptised with parents William and Mary within a narrow radius of Cheshire, just south of where the Mersey passes through Warrington, so are assumed to be siblings. Hampson, William (I42403)

The Waterways Archive lists a Henry Peet b 28.6.1880, living (1930s) at Moss Bridge, Lathom - possibly a misprint for 1888. Peet, Henry (I04709)

The Winward family possibly emigrated to the United States in the 1840s. There is a family in the 1850-1870 US censuses in Rhode Island headed by James and Ann Winward, born England, of the right age. James appears to have sailed from Liverpool on the Rochester, arriving on Jan 21 1842, returned for his marriage in Manchester 1844, and re-emigrated with his wife soon after that as their first child was born in Massachusetts the following year. James is a widower in 1900. Winward, James (I27798)

Theobold in birth record. Theobald, Myra (I26607)

Theophila in 1841 census (Macclesfield workhouse) and in 1881. Ceophilus in marriage record, Cophilus in 1871, Scophilus in 1891, Secophilus/Suophilus in Cheshire BMDs/GRO death registrations. Wilson, Theophila (I59673)

There are three baptism records on the same day - for George Hunt, Carter Hunt and George Carter Hunt.
Death date given as May 7 in Probate record, May 2 on MI.
Hunt, George Carter (I61335)

There are three William Fratson deaths recorded in Hull or Sculcoates in 1906, though none has an accurate age match. Fratson, William (I58069)

There are two birth records on Free BMD for a Moses Daker, 1845 Skipton, one in Q3, the other Q4. Daker, Moses (I16201)

There are two burials recorded at St David, Haigh: on Jan 13 1861 age four months "Grave: free ground" and on Jan 31 age 5 months "Grave: one breadth pd for by Wm Morris." Morris, John (I16946)

There are two daughters with this family in the 1861 census, Harriet 'Boden', 12 and Rebecca, 9: these are Sarah's illegitimate daughters, born Tomlinson. Boden, James (I33101)

There are two death records for a Thomas Quinn in Liverpool in 1857, the later of which seems more likely. One in Q2 1861 was for a child aged 6, perhaps his son. Quinn, Thomas (I32732)

There are two Gill children in the 1841 census with Fanny, Ann 15 and William 13 - presumably George's from an earlier marriage. There is one recorded in Tring on Aug 2, 1819, to Ann Tomlin. Gill, George (I27682)

There are two granddaughters of William and Elizabeth Gill at Crooke, Shevington, in the 1911 census - Edna, 6, and Edith, 3, both with mother's maiden name Gill in birth records on Lancs BMD: Ellen, 28, unmarried is also with the family and these are probably her daughters. Gill, Ellen (I06548)

There are two successive entries in the register for HMPrison, Wakefield dated May 31 1894 for Samuel Slater, 45, boatman, born Leeds:
No 2556a, at Bradford, drunk and disorderly, 7 days hard labour or pay 15 shillings;
No 2557b, at Bradford, assaulting a constable, 10 days hard labour or pay 23 shillings.
In the space for date of discharge, a note reads "been in Leeds prison".
Slater, Samuel (I13910)

There is a baptism at St John the Baptist, Burscough, 11 5 1879, to James and Margaret - possibly an error for James and Jane (nee Ashcroft) - the corresponding birth record on Lancs BMD gives mother's maiden name as Ashcroft. Prescott, Margaret (I04107)
