The lad fell beneath a crane as it loaded a barge on the cotton wharf at Port'o'Blackburn on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. Apparently the deceased was assisting his father in the loading of a canal barge when the accident occurred. He was taken to the Blackburn Infirmary where two operations were carried out - one for the amputation of his foot.
