 #   Notes   Linked to
8801 There is a village of Coppenhall near Stafford, but the church there is St Lawrence and this marriage is confirmed as St Michael in Cheshire BMDs, with the couple's abode given on the MC as Church Coppenhall, which is near Crewe. Family (F18036)

8802 There is also a death record in Q2 1857 Leeds. Bulmer, Marana (I14015)

8803 There is an Abstaineer's Declaration signed ba a Peter Rimmer in 1909 enrolling him in the members' book of the St Mark's, Scarisbrick, Branch of the Liverpool Diocesan Church of England Temperance Society. No details other than name given. Rimmer, Peter (I05028)

8804 There is an age discrepancy, with Thomas listed as 38 in the 1861 census and 47 in 1871, but his brother Edward is with him in 1861 and brother Robert is an immediate neighbour in 1871. Possibly he was born before his parents were married and not baptised until afterwards. Spencer, Thomas (I17593)

8805 There is an Arnold Molyneux, 6, born Widnes listed as a son with this couple in the 1901 census, but he appears as Arnold Molyneux Young, 16, a telegraph messenger, born Warrington in 1911, a nephew. Frederick and Elizabeth are married 19 years with no children born. Molyneux, Frederick (I19371)

8806 There is an earlier baptism for Henry, son of Richard and Margaret, at St Peter and St Paul, Ormskirk, on 24.9.1852, birthplace given as Newburgh Carrington, Henry (I01736)

8807 There is an earlier baptism recorded on Jan 15 1866 at St John the Baptist, Burscough, thought to be her birth date. Oddly, this is the birth date given in the 1939 census for Sarah wife of Robert Spencer, who must be Edward and Ann's second Sarah, b 1870. Spencer, Sarah (I12295)

8808 There is an earlier baptism, identical apart from the date, with a note "PB in margin" on 9.3.1867 Halsall, Robert (I06213)

8809 There is another Abraham Varley birth registered in Skipton, Q1 1875. Varley, Abraham (I13993)

8810 There is another baptism, at St Nicholas, Liverpool, on 11.7.1841 to Henry and Ann Disley, Henry (I09911)

8811 There is another boatman George (Tillotson) Varley, b Leeds 1842, son of John Varley, waterman, who must be related to this family. George b1842 married Annie Co(r)dingley and their daughter Maria Varley married Skipton boatman Richard Armstrong, but the link needed to connect these families to this tree has not yet been found (August 2014) - KRJ. Varley, George (I13924)

8812 There is another James born to William and Mary in the St Anne, Scarisbrick, records, born and baptised on 22.6.1820. Either this is another family, though no other record of such has been found, or the 1815 James has died - but no burial record has been found and the 1820 James would have been only 18 at marriage when his age is stated as "full" (ie 21+). Halsall, James (I07745)

8813 There is another John Cheetham, baptised at St Michael, Aughton, on 28.12.1817 to William Cheetham, labourer, and Ruth of Lydiate, but this John's marriage record identifies his father as James, boatman, who appears on the same page of the 1841 census. Cheetham, John (I10114)

8814 There is another possible baptism, 14.2.1773 St Peter and St Paul, Ormskirk, to Thomas and Ellin Georgeson. Georgeson, Ellen (I02322)

8815 There is another Thomas, b 1801 Northwich to John and Sarah (nee Boden), but he has been discounted because of his age and birthplace (Northwich v Wharton). Newall, Thomas (I43731)

8816 There is conflicting evidence of John's mother's first name, given as Mary in his baptism record, but Ann in an Affiliation Notice dated March 7 1838. This was delivered to Hiram Anderson, waterman, on March 16 1838 by the Warrington Overseers of the Poor stating that they would seek an Order of Affiliation and Maintenance at the General Quarter Sessions in Kirkdale (Liverpool) on April 19 1838 "of a male child born a Bastard on the body of Ann Ellis, singlewoman of Warrington, who is poor and unable to support the said child" and that she "charges you with being the true and only putative father". The date of the Notice was five days before Hiram Anderson married Rachel Davies.
John was baptised as son of Hiram (waterman) and Mary Ellis, and is in Warrington workouse in 1841 age 6 with syster Elizabeth. Surname entered as Heanderson in marriage record on Lancs OPC, Handerson on IGI.
Named in Hiram Anderson's will as his illegitimate son, "John Ellis, now trading as John Ellis Anderson", to whom he left ?100, "this being quite sufficient after the great financial assistance he has had from me from time to time".
His own 1924 probate record states: "Anderson, John Ellis (the elder) of 352 Beckwith St, Birkenhead, died 23 December 1923. Probate London 26 January to John Ellis Anderson (the younger) waterman and Elizabeth Ellen Anderson (wife of the said John Ellis Anderson jun). Effects ?4,026.13s.1."
Anderson, John Ellis (I28936)

8817 There is some doubt over Ann's maiden name: the baptism record confusingly says she is the daughter of Barnaby Hesketh, spinster; and the marriage record for Thomas Hilton and Ann Edmondson (wid) gives the bride's father as Barnaby Hesketh. But the Ann widowed when William Edmondson died in 1848 married him as Ann Watkinson, with no father's name given. Also, the baptism record for their second child states: 'Surname originally entered as Watkinson, then deleted and replaced with Edmondson'. Hesketh, Ann (I01957)

8818 There were two George Lightowlers, both watermen, baptised in 1806, Knottingley - probably cousins - one to Thomas and Mary on April 20, the other to John and Mary on May 25.
This George is absent in the 1861 census, but wife Mary is married (not widowed).
Lightowler, George (I58703)

8819 There were two George Lightowlers, both watermen, baptised in 1806, Knottingley - probably cousins - one to Thomas and Mary on April 20, the other to John and Mary on May 25.
This George's wife Sarah is widowed in the 1861 census.
Lightowler, George (I57297)

8820 There's a marriage 6.10.1827 at St Peter, Leeds, between John Kendall, cloth dresser, and Hannah Sharp. (Unlikely) Kendall, John (I08766)

8821 Thereis a second baptism on Lancs OPC for Margaret Ann Lowe, child of Thomas and Hannah, on 3.10.1880 art St Stephen, Astley, but this must be for Mary Alice whose birth is recorded as 1880 on Lancs BMD, as both girls appear in the 1881 census. Lowe, Mary Alice (I17129)

8822 Theresa in 1871 census and as witness to mother's second marriage. Lee, Thirza (I60578)

8823 Thereza in marriage record on Cheshire BMDs. Robinson, Thirza (I34751)

8824 Thimothy Bayley in baptism record. Family name spelt Bayley in early records, but Bailey in almost all censuses.  Bailey, Timothy (I20123)

8825 Third son of Simpson and Ann in baptism record. Chatterley, William (I60428)

8826 This baptism record, child of William, sailor, and Betty, is suspicious as there is no matching birth or death record, and would be too soon after the birth of Isabella. Iddon, William (I07525)

8827 This family connects so many other boatfamilies that we have included several individuals with no direct canal link, despite our usual rule "within one generation of a boatman". Baybutt, Joseph (I01539)

8828 This family has no direct canal links, but is included to distinguish this John and Alice from John Wignall and Alice Williamson, married 1827 Ormskirk, parents of boatman Richard Wignall b1827 (q.v.). Wignall, John (I12596)

8829 This would seem to be Robert b 1835 Burscough to John Watkinson and Sarah nee Mawdsley(qv) - except that the record for what would be his second marriage has him as a bachelor, not widower. Both marriage records identify his father as John Watkinson, boatman. Watkinson, Robert (I09450)

8830 This would seem to be the same Robert Watkinson, b 1835 Burscough, who also married Alice Rimmer in 1867 (qv) - except that the 1867 marriage record has him as a bachelor, not widower. Both marriage records identify his father as John Watkinson, boatman.
In 1841 census with uncle William Watkinson and Winifred, nee Cropper.
Watkinson, Robert (I05990)

8831 Thomas Abraham in baptism and marriage records. No father's name given. Abram, Thomas (I03218)

8832 Thomas Abraham in marriage record. Cross, Abraham (I18652)

8833 Thomas and Elizabeth had many children, but only Robert has known canal connections. Webster, Thomas (I60389)

8834 Thomas and father Henry have not been traced.
His wife Annie married William Wignall as a widow, but no death record found for Thomas.
He is assumed not to be the Thomas b1852 Liverpool to Henry Pedder (boatman) and Frances Wignall (family not yet on this site) as he married widow Harriet Ewing in 1890 as a bachelor.
Hard-copy details of this other family have been collated and kept in our family tree file headed by Joseph Pedder b1765 in case a link can be found. (Is it possible that the two Thomases are the same and he did not die but separated from Annie, who declared herself a widow when she remarried, and Thomas ignored his failed marriage and said he was a bachelor when he married Harriet?)
Pedder, Thomas (I10298)

8835 Thomas and Jane apparently never married. Family (F07492)

8836 Thomas and Mary had at least 13 children: we list only the two whose descendants are known to have waterways links. Stazicker, Thomas (I10741)

8837 Thomas Edward in 1861 census. Spencer, Edward Thomas (I03955)

8838 Thomas Forshaw in 1861 and 1871 censuses (after mother's marriage to John Forshaw)..
Thomas Halsall, widower in 1881, age giiven as 26.
Halsall, Thomas (I12455)

8839 Thomas Frances in baptism record. Prisoner in Wakefield Jail in 1881. Hawksworth, Thomas Francis (I16124)

8840 Thomas Frederick Leigh in marriage record, Thomas George Leigh in 1911 census. Leigh, Thomas George (I17064)

8841 Thomas G in 1881 census Ashcroft, Thomas George (I09574)

8842 Thomas Halsall in 1841 and 1851 censuses. Whittle, Thomas (I12452)

8843 Thomas Holden on BC - father not named, but given as Thomas Prescot in baptism record. In 1861 census as Thomas Bibby, son of Ellen and Thomas Bibby, who is named as father in marriage record. Not found after 1871 census. Bibby, Thomas Holden (I28047)

8844 Thomas Hugh in 1911 census. Cotton, Hugh Thomas (I17246)

8845 Thomas in 1871 census, Albert in 1881. Corker, Thomas Albert (I29025)

8846 Thomas in 1871 census. Goodier, John Thomas (I21956)

8847 Thomas in 1881 census and birth registration, but Henry thereafter. Johnson, Thomas Henry (I53725)

8848 Thomas in 1881 census. Sadler, Christopher (I26933)

8849 Thomas in 1881 census. Holford, William Thomas (I37205)
