Unusually, two death certificates were issed for Margaret: the first, on the day of her inquest, August 7th, by W Clements, Registrar, giving cause of death as 'Angina Pectoris, Certified', Informant Richard Moss, in attendance. The second was issued an September 24 by John Simpson, Deputy Registrar, giving cause of death as 'excessive drinking' - information received from P J Curry, Coroner for Liverpool.
An inquest report in the Liverpool Mercury, 11.8.1858 'on the body of Margaret Moss, 38, the wife of a beer-house keeper, living at 362 Vauxhall Road', states: 'The deceased, in consequence it was said of her husband's ill-usage, had been lately in the habit of getting drunk. The servant in the house said she was scarcely ever sober. She was found dead in bed on Saturday morning, having been exceedingly drunk on the previous night. On a post-mortem examination being made, it was found thet the deceased had died from excessive drinking, and the jury returned a verdict accordingly.'
