    • Adopted by Joshua Robinson (qv, b 1864) and Jane nee Hampton. John's history and reminiscences form an 18-page chapter of Janet Rigby's book "Life on the Lancaster Canal" (Landy Publishing 2006). She writes: "His mother died five days after giving birth at the age of 23 and his father (unnamed), unable to bring him up on his own, asked Joshua Robinson and his wife Jane, who had no children, to look after him . . . They treated him like their own son."
