  Applications for relief in the Shardlow Union Minute Book (on Ancestry) read:- Aug 13 1838: "Mary Theobald, 39, residing at Draycott. Widow . . . submits bills to the amount of 3/6 . . .orders for her daughter, Martha, being ill. Has 3 children, viz John, 13, earns 6/- boating, Martha, 9, Samuel, 5. Bill 3/6 allowed." Jan 14 1839: "Mary Theobald, 40, widow. earns 1/6 washing, applies for relief on account of her son's illness. Has 4 children, viz John 14 (ill), Martha, 9, earns 1/5, Saml illegitimate 5, Sarah, an infant illegitimate . . . Has a son Thos, 18, boating, Mary 19 in service.
