Found Drowned in the Ship Canal
Sad End of a Runcorn Woman
The body of Sophia Brown, wife of George Brown, was recovered from the Ship Canal at Randal Sluices, Norton. Mr Brown, captain of the flat Thompson, belonging to the Ship Canal Company, said that the body the jury had seen was that of his wife Sophia, age 56.
On Saturday 6th October the flat was lying in the Ship Canal at Runcorn, moored by the pier head. He gave her 7s 6d to go into the town to buy food. She left a little before 12 o'clock and returned about 1.30.
She went away again, saying she was going up to the locks. He told her not to be away long as they were expecting to go up the canal to Manchester. He never saw her alive again.
Amy Hignett of Norfolk St, Runcorn, stated that she knew the deceased and last saw her on Saturday 6th at 3.30pm going into the Derby Arms. She saw her again immediately afterwards saying they would not serve her 'as she was drunk'. She has seen her much worse than on this day.
Joseph Kirkham, in charge of the Randal Sluices, said he found the body in the Ship Canal on 10th October and helped recovery by P C Upton, who after examination said it was partly eaten away apparently by rats.
The jury returned a verdict of Found Drowned.
