  • Notes
    • John's body was found embedded in sand near Rucorn Bridge on May 9th 1896, more than five weeks after he went missing on April 1st, walking back to his boat alone after dark. Press reports said likely places in the Ship Canal and the Mersey had been dragged unsuccessfully before a boot was seen standing out of the sands at low water. A decomposing body was found to be attached, subsequently identified from clothing and contents as John Hough.
An inquest was held on May 11th, verdict: Found Drowned.
